It's almost that time of the year when resolutions are pledged, family gatherings are planned, and significant others nestle around the fireplace with a hot cup of coco. If you're on your own during the holidays, all the ambient cheer and bonding can become a depressing reminder, amplifying that question in the back of your mind: why am I alone on New Year's Eve? How does a lonesome soul cope?
An important realization to gravitate towards to is this: there's no need to mire in your being single during the holidays. Instead of succumbing to the doldrums, use this period of your life for some much needed reflection; everything in your life can be viewed in a different light and is subject to your perception of relativity.
Simply put, you alone are responsible for the way you feel and view your situation: external happenstances may influence your perception, but you have control on how you react to any given situation. How does this relate to the problem at hand?
Instead of shackling yourself to the idea of desperately finding a date and celebrating, channel all of that energy into a fun evening with friends or suchlike. Here are some helpful tips to usher in the New Year with an optimistic attitude.
Organize an evening out with a few friends. A night of billiards, bowling or
catching a Hollywood flick: all great ways to enjoy a holiday night of fun. Mix
and match any number of events for a truly lively experience.
Having fun
doesn't necessarily mean a night out on the town. Why not plan an evening in
with some close friends? Rent a few DVDs, order some take out and bask in each
other's company.
An evening out alone may be just what you need. Enjoying a
meal at a quiet restaurant with one's own self can be a peaceful experience.
Afterward, visiting a local bar can be a great way to connect with and meet a
few new faces.
With the crowd that is almost certain to be around during New
Year's Eve, perhaps you'd rather spend the evening at home? Cook yourself a nice
meal and watch some TV, or pop on your favorite DVD.
Soaking in a hot bath and reading a good novel can provide for hours of
entertainment.
On the 31st of the month, start a peaceful celebration.
If you've decided to spend your time alone on New Year's Eve, planning some activities for New Year's Day can be something to look forward to. Let's list some prospective ideas.
Perhaps one of your friends is planning on throwing a New Year's Bash? Holiday parties are always a blast. Try seeking out local public parties held in bars or other public venues. There's always the possibility you'll meet someone new!
If weather permits, outdoor activities can be a healthful and invigorating way to welcome in the New Year. Do you snowboard or ski? What better time of year to hit the slopes for some good winter sports? Call over a few friends and head on down to your local ski resort. Biking and hiking can also be a lot of fun, as you'll get your cardio and take in a nice view at the same time. If you've promised yourself to get into shape for your New Year's Resolution, winter sports and activities are a good way to kick it off. Indulge yourself with a lavish meal and some hot chocolate after a good outdoor workout.
If an outdoor excursion is not your cup of tea, consider some sort of home-based project.
This is a great time to check off a few items off of your things-to-do list. Can you think of anything that needs to be done around the house? Organizing a room with a different layout or decorating it for a new vibe can lift one's spirits. Don't make this a day of work, though; after all, it's the holidays! Turn on some music in the background and take everything at a nice pace. At the end of the day, plan a nice dinner and invite a friend over to share in the results of your newly finished home project.
You don't need to wallow in depression during the holidays. Use this time for reflection and plan new goals for the New Year. Start afresh, aiming towards goals that'll make you happy. When all is said and done, everything in your life is up to you. You are at the helm; take control today and live the way you want! Happy New Year
